What should I do when clients’ expectations grow beyond the scope of my expertise?
Facing a client whose expectations exceed your expertise is a common scenario in freelancing, and it can feel a bit daunting. Remember, you don’t have to know everything, but you must manage the situation effectively. Here’s how you can address this:
-
Acknowledge and Communicate: Be honest with your client as soon as you realize there’s a gap between their expectations and your abilities. You might say something like, "I understand you're looking for X, and I currently specialize in Y. Let's discuss how we can address this."
-
Set Boundaries: Refer back to the original scope of work. Explain how the new requests exceed it and propose a plan to manage these new requirements. This might involve renegotiating the contract to include additional time and compensation.
-
Offer Solutions: Propose alternatives. You might partner with someone who has the necessary expertise or suggest a phased project approach where you collaborate with other experts. This reflects well on you and solves the client’s problem simultaneously.
-
Learn and Adapt: If the expansion aligns with your interests, consider it a learning opportunity. You can either dedicate time to upskill or tackle the expanded scope in phases so you can build your expertise gradually.
-
Redefine Project Success: Sometimes, clients need help understanding what success genuinely looks like in a given project. Use your knowledge to help redefine their goals. This might mean scaling down expectations to something more achievable or realistic within the existing framework.
When I was transitioning out of my engineering role and into creative freelancing, I often found myself in similar situations. I learned that emulating the Capture, Develop, Expose framework helped: I’d capture what I could learn about the new field, develop my skills, and then expose my progress to the client with honesty. Remember, your journey is about more than just delivering on a contract—it's about expanding your capabilities with each challenge.
